Mobile Phones And Kids – How To Keep Them Safe
March 20th, 2010
For a child, mobile phone is a must have gadget. Many become fixated with the device when they are babies, often being given a toy phone to play with so as to not feel left out.
It’s not surprising then, that many children begin making demands for a phone at an early age and most parents are only too happy to oblige.
New research shows the extent of the fascination that children have, with over half of three to 15 year olds using a mobile phone regularly. The research carried out also showed that some parents remain unconcerned when it comes to monitoring how their children make use of their phones.
Children are becoming technologically savvy at an increasingly earlier age.
The majority of parents keep a restriction on their children’s spending habits with over three-quarters only allowing their children to use pay as you go mobile phones.
Many mobiles have the ability to access the internet. Accessing the web can be costly on a mobile phone, especially if a connection to the internet is left on unintentionally. Also, it’s worthwhile checking to see if filters can be placed on the device in-order to bar access to sites that are not suitable for children.
Mobile phones have been designed that are specifically designed for children. Some have useful functions such as tracking. An example feature of one is the ability to send emails at regular intervals that inform the parent of the childs whereabouts.
Call restrictions can be set up on the phone so only a limited amount of numbers can be dialled.
With an increasing amount of children now regularly using mobiles, we should expect to see a surge in the amount of child friendly phones being made available.

Mobile Phones – 3 Generations and Beyond
March 19th, 2010
1st generation (1G)
Mobile phones started being widely used, through the 1980s. These mobile phones, more commonly termed “cellular” phones, function based on cellular networks with base stations located close to each other. The first commercially available mobile phone was the Motoral DynaTAC 8000X. The early models of mobile phones where all big in size, and were all initially designed for use, permanently, in vehicles. Motorola soon converted the bulky phones and introduced the first truly portable, handheld phone. These systems (TACS, RTMI and NMT, to name a few) came to be classified as the first generation of mobile phones. These phones do not have any functions besides the core function of being able to have calls being made while on the move.
2nd generation (2G)
Second generation (2G) mobile phones such as the GSM and IS-95 (CDMA) were introduced in the 1990s. The first GSM network, “Radiolinja”, was started in Finland, 1991. 2G phones utilize digital circuit switched transmission, and were characterized by the introduction of advanced and fast phone to network signaling. It was 2G phones that started the trend of mobile phones being 100 – 200g hand-held devices, which have become the standard size of present phones. This change of size, from the early bulky phones, was possible as electronics technology became more advanced. 2G phones started to have larger display screens, and incorporate display colors other than just the normal black-and-white.
3rd generation (3G)
Development of 3G phones began not long after the introduction of 2G phones. 3G phones differ from 2G ones in the sense that 3G technology has been standardized in the IMT-2000 standardization process. This process does not standardize on a single technology, but rather on a set of requirements (e.g. 384kbits/s outdoors). During the development of 3G systems, some 2G networks were upgraded; these upgraded systems (2.5G) have some 3G features, but were unable to provide all 3G multimedia services, nor reach high data rates. With the introduction of video streaming and wireless LAN (WiFi) into phones, it is just like carrying a Personal Computer out, but in the size of a mobile phone. One can view videos while on the move or check email on the move. The future
It is not possible to imagine what mobile phones in the future will become. Would they become the size of a microchip? Or be implanted in the human brain, resulting in even not having to carry a device? The future for mobile phones is limited to only humans’ imagination.
