Mobile Phones – Essential to Our Every Day Lives

February 6th, 2010

Hands up who of us could live without our mobile phone. The key word in that sentence was “could” not “could not”. A person’s reliability on the phone has become so common that there is even a phrase for someone who can not live without it; Nomophobic.

Children as young as 3 years old have their own mobile and even though this may seem obscene, the reality is that many people base their business and social life around it. The amount of money that has been spent on mobile phones over the past 15 years is quite unbelievable and with an estimated 1.8 billion people having at least one it is easy to see how.

Experts estimate that 90% of the world has mobile coverage and the way technology is improving by the day, customers have even more reasons to join the mobile revolution. The likes of Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have made mobile phones easy to come by and are seen as an essential. This means that customers would choose to give up a number of other things before downgrading or getting rid of their phone.

Mobile Phones – Nokia’s Concept Smell Phone

October 30th, 2009

Twenty five lucky Industrial Design MA students from the College of Art and Design in London have been working hard to create concept phones that will be capable of providing customers with 4G or 5G devices.

The students were working for a cash prize and for a once in a lifetime chance to work alongside the design team at Nokia. Another exciting thing for the team of students was that their winning design would be made into a dummy handset to be shown at the London Air Gallery.

One of the designs, which is unique and extremely distinctive, is the Nokia Scentsory concept. When this phone is closed it resembles and can be used as a slim candy bar phone and when this mobile phone is open you can make use of the screens and the keyboard.

Although this looks stylish, it doesn’t set this device apart from other mobile phones available. However, this is because the best is yet to come. This phone also has a very exclusive ability as it can allow you to smell, feel and hear the caller’s environment when it is in Scentsory mode.

This phone, like all of the designs, was designed to be a premium phone but also a mass market device. This probably means that when these little stunners eventually make it to the shops they won’t make for one of the best mobile phone deals, so if you are looking for cheap mobile phones you may have to wait even longer before you can get your hands on one.

Although this phone is exceptional in many ways it was not the winning design, no doubt due to the fact that it is way ahead of itself with regards to being sold in the shops in the near future.

The winning design was the Nokia 111 and was inspired by the practice of carrying around photos of loved ones. The phone was designed to act as a photo frame wherever the user is so that a part of their home furniture can be carried around with them. It is to act as an emotional object that will remind you of a special place or person so that you will be constantly reminded of them when you are away.
