It is hard to find somebody under the age of 50 now who does not have a mobile phone. With the abundance of gadgets and extras, as well as the huge choice of design, color and manufacturer it is little surprise that they have become more of a must have techno fashion gadget than a simple communication tool.
However, with all of these wonderful additions such as cameras, videos, MP3 players and, in one case, “kiss sensitive technology” mobile phones are the perfect target for thieves and pickpockets.
It may surprise you, depending on how safe you usually are, but 6 out of 10 people leave the pin off their mobile phones, or if they do use a pin, a huge amount of us have the password set to 0000. You should keep the pin on your phone, and try not to set it to anything like your bank pin number.
Other than the pin system, mobile companies have been trying to improve mobile phone security by means of new technology. Examples of what may be soon to come is a Thumb-Print scan on the number pad of your phone, that will scan yours and a limited amount of others’ prints and will not work for anybody else.
Also, there is a two piece system being tested. You wear one part, for example as a bracelet or badge, and the other piece is inside your phone. When the system is on, and the two get further than 10 meters apart, the phone will emit an ear piercingly loud siren letting everybody know that whoever has it on their person has stolen the phone.
More unusual, is the “swagger” technology that has been created by Finnish scientists VTT. The technology records the phone owners walk style, pace and movement, so that when it is subjected to a pattern that does not match it, it will lock up. You must then enter a number of passwords before being able to unlock it again.
Hopefully these new methods will be available in our shops in the near future, so that we can enjoy our favourite gadget without worrying about people praying on it when our backs are turned. Personally, I like the thumb reader one the best, very James bond!
